Program Description

Deposit Deadline Extension: January 31

This unique summer travel experience has been offered annually since 2005, with over 100 students and 14 different faculty members taking advantage of this great opportunity. If you enroll in this program, you’ll travel abroad, spending three weeks in eastern Germany with fellow Ashland students and professors. At the same time, you’ll earn six credits of Ashland University courses, and all of the offered courses are taught by full-time Ashland University faculty. The AU in Germany Program fulfills the GPS Course with Study Away.

Students will have the opportunity to stay at the newly renovated Colleg Wittenberg, allowing them to study in a historical environment and have easy access to lecture rooms, a cafeteria, laundry facilities, wireless access, bikes, a recreation room, and outside recreational facilities. Many of the students who have taken this trip come back and say it was the best and most beneficial experience they had while in college.

FOR BUSINESS MAJORS
If you need to fulfill your BUS 239/339/439 core requirement or are an International Business major looking for study abroad credit, the AU in Germany Program can satisfy these academic objectives. You must work closely with Dr. Pittenger to complete your portfolio. This includes work prior to departure and upon return.

You have three options for fulfilling the above.
1. Take two courses offered through the Germany Program and register for BUS X39 the following fall semester
2. Take two courses offered through the Germany Program plus register for BUS X39 paying for an additional 3 credit hours
3. Take one course offered on the Germany Program plus BUS X39 at the Germany Program price

PROGRAM EXCURSIONS
During your time in Germany, several exciting excursions will be planned. There is a day trip to Berlin and two overnight study excursions. These are included in the program price!

DAY EXCURSION TO BERLIN
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is dynamic, cosmopolitan and creative, allowing for every kind of lifestyle. East meets West in the metropolis at the heart of a changing Europe. Germany's largest city is full of opportunities just waiting to be seized in all areas, like entertainment, recreation, economy, science and academic life.

OVERNIGHT STUDY EXCURSIONS
Leipzig – One Overnight
Bursting with fresh confidence and vitality, this grand old city is now a busy venue for trade fairs and conferences and a major center of trade, culture, nightlife and shopping. The lovely old Renaissance and Baroque buildings, historical trading centers and malls are now fully restored and modernized, providing a stylish paradise for shoppers and sightseers.
Erfurt, Weimar, Buchenwald and Wartburg Castle – Two Overnights
Martin Luther described the city of Erfurt as "in the center of the center" of Germany. It has a long history as a center of German religion and learning, with one of the oldest universities in Central Europe.
As a seat of literature, music and art, Weimar has a worldwide reputation, and since 1999 has been experiencing a new burst of vitality as a European City of Culture.
Buchenwald Concentration Camp was established on Ettersberg Hill near Weimar in July 1937. Between 1937 and 1945, more than 250,000 people were held captive in the camp.
The Wartburg Castle is located on a 1,230-foot cliff overlooking Eisenach. It was founded in 1067 AD and is one of the best preserved castles in Germany. This castle is probably most known for giving refuge to Martin Luther in 1521-1522 while he translated the New Testament into German. It is considered by many to be one of the finest Romanesque structures in Germany.
