Program Description

COBE students are presented with a one-of-a-kind opportunity through the COBE in Taiwan program. Students will spend six and a half weeks at Providence University in Taichung, Taiwan while earning 9 credits (6 are completed during the summer and the remaining 3 will be completed in the fall).

By participating in this program as well as taking an IPR course at Ashland University, students can earn credits for the International Business Minor.

Students will take a three credit business elective course focusing on doing business in Taiwan taught by a Providence University faculty member. This course can be counted as an elective in the student’s major as well.

Additionally, students will study the Chinese language for ten hours each week earning three credit hours.

Finally, the BUS 239/339/439 core requirement will also be fulfilled during this program. Providence University will coordinate several company visits. In addition to the site visits, students will complete reading assignments and research projects fulfilling their internship requirement. This course, while starting at PU in the summer, will be finished at Ashland University in the fall.

Providence University is the direct result of eastern and western collaboration. Throughout its history of rapid growth, it has valued other cultures and welcomed students and professors from all over the world while preserving its own Taiwanese heritage. Today, the Office of International Affairs functions as a bridge between Providence and academic institutions of higher learning in other countries. It is committed to the promotion of Mandarin Chinese language and Taiwanese culture, wider and greater academic international opportunities for students and professors, and the internationalization of the campus. In its capacity as the formal representative of Providence University to the global community, the Office of International Affairs initiates, communicates, and follows up on academic international matters.

Taichung is the third largest city in Taiwan, located in the west-central part of the island. It has a pleasant climate and a population of just over one million people. The city is home to many manufacturers and in recent years has experienced rapid growth in the diversity of its cultural offerings.
Taichung offers many opportunities to explore. They have a world-class science museum and hiking in the nearby hills. There are also many famous night markets that provide night-time excitement including the ChungHwa night market, the Feng-Chia university night market, the Tung-Hai university night market, and the Chung-Shiao night market.
